A Day in the Life of a Blue Moon Franchisee

It’s Friday night, and you’ve filled the last few days with client interviews, presentations and staging and pricing out an estate. On the way home, you make a mental checklist of all of the last minute things you need to have done before the big day tomorrow. After enjoying some dinner and researching some jewelry that was just added to the next day’s sale, you find a couple of hours to kickback.

There are a few butterflies in your stomach. Tomorrow is your game day. This feeling is nothing new. It is a welcomed excitement, as you know that you’re properly prepared.

Rise and shine as the coffee pot kicks in at 6 a.m. You have a quick bite to eat and head out the door in your Blue Moon Estate Sales gear. The drive allows you to clear your thoughts and go over the checklist of things that need to be done before the first customer walks through the door. 

You arrive at the sale and are welcomed by a line of twelve cars parked along the side of the street. You recognize a few of your regulars, welcome them with a smile and inform them that the numbers sheet will be out shortly. Upon entering the home, you start the pre-sale routine, getting the numbers out, turning on lights and fans throughout the house, opening cash drawers and securing the high-end jewelry and watches in display cases. 

The first member of your team shows up at 7:15, and the rest trickle in over the next 15 minutes. The energy is high as everyone gets the last items ready, and the countdown begins. You announce, “Two minutes until we open, team! Get your smiles on, and let’s do this!”

You open the door with sold stickers in hand and 100 people in line. The familiar feeling of adrenaline pumps through your body as you inform your customers of sales procedures, including how to purchase the Mercedes that is sitting in the driveway. It is 8:00, and the first customers walk through the door with your team in place ready to serve.

There is still a line outside the door 20 minutes later. The queue to checkout is beginning to swell as the first wave of customers heads for the cash register with their estate sale loot. You grab a support iPad and begin ringing up customers to help keep the line moving.

After the initial surge, a 10:30 lull comes. There is no rest for the weary as it is time to start restaging and reorganizing the home. Knowing the afternoon rush is on the way, you want to make sure that the sale is in tip-top shape.

The sale is running smoothly when all of a sudden, a loud crash comes from the upstairs. You spring into action and check out the problem at hand. A small child was playing with toys and created a domino effect that sent two Nerf guns and a Supersoaker to the floor. No harm was done, but you briefly chat with the child’s guardian to make sure that everyone and everything stays safe.

Jumping back into sales mode, you help a family decide that they do need a sleek Mid Century Modern dining set, especially at such a great price. You comment on a plush elephant picked out by their daughter. The family is overjoyed and excitedly make plans to transport their finds.

It’s now nearing 2:00. You and your team have done an excellent job. Looking around from room to room, you see a lot of empty space. You figure that you’ve cleared about 70% of the home. You kindly inform customers that the sale will be closing and that they need to make their way to the checkout lines. You begin to close down sections of the home by shutting off lights and closing doors. The last of your remaining customers head out the door with their estate sale treasures. The sale is officially closed for the day.

You walk around the emptied home restaging and organizing while your team counts the cash and closes out the registers. You do a final walkthrough of the home to make sure everything is ready for Day Two of the sale. You lock the door and smile, knowing that you found so many happy homes for your clients’ items. 

It was a great first day filled with fun, excitement and hard work. You walk to your car and head home for some good food and relaxation. You’re happy to unwind, as tomorrow is Discount Day. You know that you’ll be greeted by a slew of eager shoppers ready to snag some excellent deals.
